When we are about to start a language course, whatever it is, we have many doubts, especially when we are not sure where to start. It is clear that there are certain places that, due to their experience or their trajectory, are usually places that guarantee a good course, but sometimes we either do not find places or it escapes our budget and we have to look for alternatives.
That’s when we start to investigate, open the search engine and start to see which language schools are close to home and how many stars they have as references. The reviews also help us to select the language academy where we will decide to train.
In this way we already started to do a screening, which focuses mainly on two factors: the proximity to my home and the references I can read on the internet. But is this enough to select a good language course?
To do this we must ask ourselves what makes us feel comfortable in a course and want to continue in it because in addition to being in a good environment you achieve the objectives you had set.
It is always better that the teacher who teaches you a language is a native speaker, because by listening to him we can imitate his accent much better and try to get as close as possible to an accent originating from a specific area. But it’s not enough for the teacher to be a native speaker, he or she must be trained as a teacher, as they must be knowledgeable of the language they teach in depth.
How will I learn?
Another important factor is the method of teaching that takes place during the classes, so the philosophy of the language academy has to be in line with our needs. We consider that the most successful method is the communicative method, since thanks to it we manage to make a linguistic immersion from the very beginning of the class and we are forced to intervene in the classroom with the resources we have of the language of study.
What material is used?
This is very important, because if the support for learning is not updated and moves away from the reality in which we live, it is much more complicated to connect with the topics and, by extension, to participate in the lessons. Also important are the internet resources that are used to energize the classes, such as: Kahoot, Quizlet, Pear Deck, EdPuzzle, etc.
How many classmates am I going to have?
Each person is unique in his or her learning, and while it is true that there are repeated patterns, it is best to treat each student on the basis of his or her personal needs, even though there may be an adjustment process from time to time. But for this to be possible it is necessary to be in a small group where there are not many people and the teacher can dedicate more time to each of the students.
By solving these questions we hope to have helped you in the criteria that should be taken into account at the time of selection.
